Stansted Mountfitchet is a village and civil parish in the county of Essex, England, near the Hertfordshire border, 30 miles north of London, with a population of 5,532 according to the 2001 census. Situated in north-west Essex near the Hertfordshire border, Stansted Mountfitchet is a few miles north of Bishops Stortford.

Airport

The US Air force constructed an air field near the village during the Second World War. After the end of the War it was taken over by the Government and developed into a commercial airport.

Schools

The village contains two primary schools and one high school, the latter of which was recently renamed the Mountfitchet Mathematics and Computing College.

Castles

Stansted Mountfitchet CastleStansted Mountfitchet is believed to have been fortified originally in the Iron Age, and subsequently by the Romans and Vikings. Stansted Mountfitchet possesses beautiful castles. The Norman Castle is believed to have been constructed during 1066.

The Mountfitchet Castle is a unique time capsule and stands majestically overlooking the Stort Valley. The original site of Mountfitchet Castle has a long and impressive history. This world-famous historically accurate reconstructed castle enables the visitor to travel back in time to
1066 Norman England. Explore the Castle and roam through the Norman Village hidden behind the castle walls, wander in and out of the many houses and view the scenes, smell the log fires burning and experience the ambiance of an ancient bygone lifestyle - a living history, hands-on and interactive experience.

Museums

The village also boasts the House on the Hill Toy Museum, which is the largest toy museum in Europe. Located next to the castle, the museum opened in 1991 and holds over 80,000 toys which are mostly from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.

A working windmill built in 1787 is in the village, and is open to the public once a month.

A large number of homes are being built in a new development to the southeast side of the village, at the site of the former Rochford Nurseries in Forest Hall Road.

One more place is the art gallery and museum at The Herbert, you can find the creative media studios and an arts information and history centre.
